2 Alpes funicular

The express dome provides a quick access to the top of the Deux Alpes ski area (3421 m) for skiing but also to contemplate the landscape. The highest funicular in France, it began its operation on July 29th, 1989. This completely underground system has been carved out of a rocky layer, 10 to 40 meters thick, beneath the 100 meters thick layer of ice of the Mont de Lans glacier.

The two vehicles, each equipped with 125 seats, work in a back and forth motion at a speed of 10 m/s for a traffic of 3000 passengers per hour. The bottom station is located 40 meters below the level of the installations of the toe of the glacier: it can be accessed through an inclined elevator. From the top station platforms, the access to the glacier is made via elevators installed in concrete vertical wells.
